For the first day of the Event Program of the Athens Art Book Fair 2019 we introduce performative talks that explore practices of text assemblage and re-printing and blur the boundaries between author, performer and publisher. The day will close with a queer poetry slam in the entrance of the arcade, so don’t miss it!

AM: Love, Anima, Gaia (redistributing the Public Domain)
Talk by Petros Moris & Lito Kattou
Artists Lito Kattou and Petros Moris present their publication project AM, a zine of literature, poetry and theory from previous centuries, a series of collections of texts and book excerpts considered today as public domain material. The talk will look at the concepts deriving from the publication and its thematic issues, as well as the project’s parallel function as a collaborative workshop for the production of artistic objects, and a platform for multimedia collaborations.
Οι εικαστικοί Λητώ Κάττου και Πέτρος Μώρης παρουσιάζουν το εκδοτικό τους project ΑΜ, ένα zine λογοτεχνίας, ποίησης και θεωρίας από ιστορικές περιόδους, μια σειρά συλλογών κειμένων και αποσπασμάτων βιβλίων που θεωρούνται σήμερα υλικό ανοικτής πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας. Η παρουσίαση θα εξετάσει ιδέες προερχόμενες από την έκδοση και τα θεματικά της τεύχη, όπως επίσης και την παράλληλη λειτουργία του project ως συνεργατικό εργαστήριο παραγωγής καλλιτεχνικών αντικειμένων και πλατφόρμα πολυμεσικών συνεργασιών.

New Narratives for the Now: Notes on zophos, poetic deviance, and good omens
Talk by Dimitra Ioannou
Dimitra Ioannou, a poet and the publisher of the Athens based magazine A) GLIMPSE) OF), will be reading her essay poem for two voices about contemporary, experimental, and feminist poetics in the age of Zophos. D.I. writes poetry in English, or in English and Greek simultaneously. Her work has appeared in magazines such as Splinter, MAI: Feminism & Visual Culture, ZARF, and DATABLEED.
H Δήμητρα Ιωάννου, ποιήτρια και εκδότρια του περιοδικού A) GLIMPSE) OF) με βάση την Αθήνα, θα διαβάσει το ποιητικό της δοκίμιο για δύο φωνές σχετικά με τη σύγχρονη, πειραματική και φεμινιστική ποιητική στην εποχή του Ζόφου. Η Δ.Ι. γράφει ποίηση στα Αγγλικά, ή στα Αγγλικά και τα Ελληνικά ταυτόχρονα. Η δουλειά της έχει παρουσιαστεί σε περιοδικά όπως τα Splinter, MAI: Feminism & Visual Culture, ZARF, και DATABLEED.

Avid Readers 4: Materials, Form, Organization, Actions – A Lecture on Reading
Peformative reading organised by Alan Smart
“Avid reader” is a collocation — a phrase of two or more words that accompany each other more often than would occur by chance. Avid Readers is an event to convene a group of different readers according to something other than chance, something like desire (the Latin root of “avid”).
Avid Readers is an experiment in reprinting and at the same time is a script for a collective reading. It is an elliptical out-loud construction of a theme in print. Avid Readers reproduces not only words but also the form of words in print. We read together not as a ritual but instead as the lucid collective enunciation of the material texts assembled.
Avid Readers is a periodic reading event organised by Alan Smart and Jack Henry Fisher (Other Forms). For this event they will produce a small bootleg edition of a compilation of short essays from the first four issues of Counter-Signals, and other associated texts, and invite a set of friends and strangers in Athens to read them aloud in the course of an hour.

Η φράση “Avid reader” (παθιασμένος αναγνώστης) είναι σύμφραση — φράση που αποτελείται από δύο ή παραπάνω λέξεις που συνοδεύουν η μία την άλλη συχνότερα από ότι αν ήταν τυχαίο γεγονός. Το Avid Readers είναι ένα δρώμενο για την συνεύρεση μιας ομάδας αναγνωστών στη βάση κάτι που δεν είναι τυχαίο, κάτι όπως η επιθυμία (η λατινική ρίζα της λέξης avid).
Το Avid Readers είναι ένα πείραμα στην επανατύπωση και ταυτόχρονα ένα σενάριο για συλλογική ανάγνωση. Είναι μία ελλειπτική, “φωναχτή” κατασκευή ενός θέματος στο χαρτί. Το Avid Readers αναπαράγει όχι απλά λέξεις, αλλά και τη φόρμα έντυπων λέξεων. Διαβάζουμε μαζί, όχι σαν ιεροτελεστία αλλά αντ’αυτού σαν σαφή, συλλογική άρθρωσης των συγκεντρωμένων υλικών κειμένων.
Το Avid Readers είναι επαναλαμβανόμενη δράση ανάγνωσης που οργανώνεται από τους Alan Smart και Jack Henry Fisher (εκδόσεις Other Forms). Ένα μείγμα φίλων και αγνώστων καλούνται να διαβάσουν μια συλλογή κειμένων από τα προηγούμενα τεύχη της περιοδικής έκδοσης Counter-Signals.

Publishing Manifestos
Talk by Michalis Pichler
Publishing Manifestos was published in 2019 by MIT Press and features 75 key texts of critical engagement with publishing from protagonists of the field.
Michalis Pichler, editor of the book, will present this edition and address: Alienation, Seriosity Dummies, A Short Walk Through a Historical Arc of Tension, and address why the Artist’s book is a Problematic Term, Materialzärtlichkeit, Paradigm Shift and Post-digital Turn, and Art Book Fairs as Public Spheres.
Το «Publishing Manifestos» εκδόθηκε το 2019 από την MIT Press και περιέχει 75 κείμενα-κλειδιά που πραγματεύονται με κριτική ματιά εκδοτικές πρακτικές από πρωταγωνιστές του καλλιτεχνικού αυτού πεδίου.

Queer Ink is a publishing initiative, run by Nikos “Mochi” Georgiou, aiming at producing, publishing and promoting printed and electronic material around feminist and queer politics and expression. The slam will take place on the bottom of the stairs.

We will hear presentations from practitioners from Iran, Turkey and North Macedonia and end the day with a panel discussion dedicated to our very own Athenian scene and then of course an after party!

Why we are still burning books?
Workshop by Bia Bittencourt
What does publishing mean in the Anthropocene epoch? How can we, readers and producers of books, deal with the realities of book manufacturing during a climatic crisis? This workshop aims at collecting ideas and thoughts from our catastrophic temporality and turning them into alive brainstorming tools to find out possible solutions.
Bia Bittencourt was born in Brazil and lives in Spain. She runs Plana Book Festival and a bookshop in São Paulo, and also, No_Libros, an experimental publishing house focused on sustainable solutions for book market.

Ποιος ο ρόλος των εκδόσεων την εποχή του Ανθρωπόκενου; Πως μπορούμε εμείς, οι αναγνώστριες και παραγωγοί των βιβλίων να διαχειριστούμε τις πραγματικότητες της βιβλιο-παραγωγής σε περίοδο κλιματικής κρίσης; Αυτό το εργαστήριο στοχεύει στη συλλογή ιδεών και σκέψεων από την καταστροφική μας προσωρινότητα και η μετατροπή τους σε ζωντανά εργαλεία για την εύρεση πιθανών λύσεων.
Η Bia Bittencourt γεννήθηκε στη Βραζιλία και ζει στην Ισπανία. Διοργανώνει το Plana Book Festival στο Sao Paolo και το πειραματικό εκδοτικό εγχείρημα No_Libros που επικεντρώνεται σε λύσεις για την βιομηχανία του βιβλίου.

Zine Culture in Turkey & Heyt be! Fanzin // Deniz Beşer
Beşer will present an insight into Turkey’s past and present fanzine scene through his first-hand experience as an artist and co-publisher of “Heyt be! Fanzin”.
Heyt be! Fanzin is an art zine which is published since 2010 by Deniz Beşer & Sedef Karakaş. As a zine, main aim is setting up the alternative exhibition possibilities on the paper. All issues host different artists from different countries. Also, Heyt be! Fanzin organizes exhibitions, workshops and events in Turkey, as well as participating in many zine fairs, festivals, and exhibitions in Europe, in order to introduce zine culture to greater masses.

O Beşer θα μιλήσει για την παλαιότερη και σύγχρονη σκηνή των fanzine στην Τουρκία μέσα από την προσωπική του εμπειρία σαν καλλιτέχνης και εκδότης του συλλογικού εγχειρήματος “Heyt be! Fanzin”.
Το Heyt be! Fanzin είναι ένα εικαστικό zine που εκδίδεται από το 2010 από τους Deniz Beşer & Sedef Karakaş. Σαν έντυπο, στοχεύει στη δημιουργία ενός εναλλακτικού, “χάρτινου” εκθεσιακού χώρου με κάθε τεύχος να φιλοξενεί ένα καινούργιο συνδυασμό καλλιτεχνών από διαφορετικές χώρες. Το Heyt be! Art Books in Tehran and Bazar Art Book Fair // Mahsa Nejad
Nejad will present and discuss the intricacies of the world of artist publications in Tehran and present her very own Bazar Art Book Fair. Bazar is an Iran-based platform for exhibition and distribution of art books. Founded in 2018 by co-directors Hedieh Ahmadi and Ronak Moshtaghi, the project seeks to establish an inclusive community of artists, publishers, and audiences that allows them to exhibit and trade their publications independently.
Η Nejad θα μιλήσει για τις ιδιαιτερότητες στο τοπίο των καλλιτεχνικών εκδόσεων στην Τεχεράνη και θα παρουσιάσει το δικό της εγχείρημα «Bazar Art Book Fair». Το BAZAR είναι πλατφόρμα για την έκθεση και διανομή εικαστικών βιβλίων. Ιδρύθηκε το 2018 από τις Hedieh Ahmadi και Ronak Moshtaghi, και στοχύει στη δημιουργία συμπεριληπτικής κοινότητας εικαστικών, εκδοτών και αναγνωστών που επιτρέπει στην ανεξάρτητη παρουσίαση και ανταλλαγή εκδόσεων.

Artist publishing in North Macedonia & Private Print project // Marija Hristova & Ilija Prokopiev
PrivatePrint’s establishment as an art book publisher and a studio for interdisciplinary research and practices in contemporary art and graphic design, is directly connected to the cultural and social context in North Macedonia. The weak institutional and artistic network and forms of expression has created an empty space that an enterprise of this sort could inhabit and develop. This talk by PrivatePrint’s founders, Marija Hristova and Ilija Prokopiev, will be focused on this issue, and will try to trace it to PrivatePrint’s mission: based on the premise that art and publishing are the perfect match for the democratization of culture, disseminating art ideas and making them easily available is at the basis of our practice.
Ilija Prokopiev and Marija Hristova are founders of PrivatePrint and its editors, both with a background in cultural studies. Ilija Prokopiev (1985) is an artist and his professional practice includes interdisciplinary artistic work, art-works in public space, writing and curating. Marija Hristova (1985) is a philologist and her practice includes writing (essays, short stories, and journalism), editing, and project management.

Η δημιουργία του εκδοτικού οίκου εικαστικών βιβλίων PrivatePrint και η εγκαθίδρυση του ως στούντιο διεπιστημονικής έρευνας και σύγχρονων πρακτικών στα εικαστικά και τη γραφιστική, είναι απευθείας συνδεδεμένη με το πολιτιστικό και κοινωνικό συγκείμενο της Βόρειας Μακεδονίας. Το PrivatePrint κάλυψε το κενό που δημιουργήθηκε από την ελάχιστη θεσμική υποστήριξη και τα αδύναμα καλλιτεχνικά δίκτυα της ευρύτερης περιοχής. Αυτή η ομιλία, από τους ιδρυτές του Privet Print, Marija Hristova και ο Ilija Prokopiev, θα επικεντρωθεί στις συνθήκες που επέτρεψαν την άνθηση του Private Print και η σύνδεσή τους με τη συνολική στόχευση του εγχειρήματος: Ξεκινώντας από την πεποίθηση πως ο συνδυασμός εικαστικών και εκδόσεων είναι ο ιδανικός για τον εκδημοκρατισμό του πολιτισμού, στόχος τους είναι η προσβασιμότητα και η διάδοση καλλιτεχνικών ιδεών.
