Editions JOJO is a Mumbai-based publishing house, photobook library & platform for photography that has published experimental photobooks ranging from deeply personal to satirical. Kaamna Patel will talk about the journey of Editions JOJO & its various projects, including a podcast & a travelling exhibition, reflecting upon independent publishing as a playground for experimentation and a channel for resistance in South Asia.

Kaamna Patel is a visual artist, publisher & founder of Editions JOJO, currently based in Mumbai, her home city. Editions JOJO is an independent publisher, photobook library & platform for photography based out of Mumbai in India. Editions JOJO has spearheaded & executed a wide range of projects and currently operates under multiple rubrics, including a podcast on photography called Glass Eye, an exhibition of publishing as resistance from South Asia & a YouTube channel dedicated to independently published books from the global south. An introduction to the horizontal collaborative practice of OAZA COLLECTIVE, with a spotlight on the OAZA BOOKS project, initiated in 2016 by its members.

OAZA, an all-female collective, was founded in 2013 by six artists and designers: Nina Bačun, Ivana Borovnjak, Roberta Bratović, Tina Ivezić, Maja Kolar, and Maša Poljanec. Since then, OAZA has been continuously involved in art and design research-based projects within the independent cultural sector.

OAZA BOOKS is an independent publishing venture focusing on art, artistic research, design, poetry, and illustration. The books are designed, edited, and published by OAZA in Zagreb.

In various societies, cultural heritage is perceived as a sacred object, which has to be preserved and safeguarded, often becoming a sensitive issue. Because of multiple challenges gravitating around notions of power, domination, and identity, incorporating patrimonial objects into the work of creation has become a stormy endeavor. Interested in sound, the FLEE art collective has for the last decade organized transdisciplinary projects using culture as research as well as artistic fabric, an experience that has enlighted the art collective on various problems that contemporary practices face, when dealing with heritage. During the talk, the collective will theoretically set what they perceive being the nature of the equation.

Founded by Alan Marzo, Olivier Duport and Carl Åhnebrink, FLEE is an art collective functioning as an independent publisher, record label and curatorial platform.

A presentation of the editorial project ‘profundo ediciones’ – a micro-publisher of queer fanzines about sexuality, gender and the body that was born in the perisphere of the city of buenos aires, argentina and currently resides in berlin.

Pessima is an annual, independent magazine based in Milan, that explores and represents Trans* identities, born in response to the absence of a similar editorial initiative within the international magazine landscape. It delves into how these identities are conveyed through the lens of young contemporary art, highlighting the varied experiences of the subjects. The project will be introduced in the form of a talk, with Simona and Marte, founders of Pessima, addressing the main challenges and milestones: from developing editorials on a global scale to the influence the project has had in shaping a worldwide community of trans artists, and vice versa.

Simona Coltello (b. 1998) is the Creative Director and Founder of Pessima. Elements of Biomechanics, Post Humanism and Post Internet highly influence her research and art practise.

Marte Livio Gastaldello (b. 2000) is an artist and curator currently based in Milan. He is the co-founder, Exhibition Curator, and Head of Research and Publications at Pessima.

Surviving through publishing or because of it? A look into the poetic, cut and paste world of Mpataria, a queer DIY publishing initiative focused on supporting and promoting queer underground art in Greece.

Mochi is a poet, artist, publisher, organiser and gogo dancer raised in Peristeri, Athens, watching Digimon and Greek TV. 

Feria Migra is a key space in Buenos Aires for the circulation and visibility of independent printed art in Latin America. Since its inception, it has brought together editors, artists, and collectives who use print as a medium for artistic and political expression. The fair stands out for offering an accessible and communal space where independent and experimental publications find their place outside of traditional commercial circuits.

In this context, Balam, the first and only queer photography magazine in Latin America, finds a special resonance. More than just a magazine, it has become a cultural project that not only documents but also redefines queer imaginaries through photography. In addition to its editorial role, Balam organizes an annual open call, creating a bridge between emerging and established artists. The magazine has taken this commitment beyond the printed page, being invited to exhibit in museums, bookstores, and international fairs.

In this talk, Juárez will explore how the role of the editor is not limited to content creation but extends to organizing collective spaces such as book and print art fairs, which amplify diverse voices and foster new communities around art. What is the impact of these projects in creating networks, both locally and globally, and what is the importance of preserving spaces of cultural resistance in a world dominated by digital media?

Currently based in Buenos Aires, Luis Juárez works as an editor, curator and cultural manager in the field of photography. He manages artistic projects and produces photobooks, magazines, exhibitions and art fairs. In 2015, he founded Balam, the only current magazine of contemporary queer photography in Latin America. In 2018 he founded MIGRA, the Buenos Aires Art Book Fair. Since 2020, he has been part of the Archivo de la Memoria Trans Argentina (Argentina Trans Memory Archive), where he coordinates its publishing house. 

In this talk, visual artist and curator Florin Fâra will explore the intersection of DIY culture, independent publishing, and contemporary art. Through his experience as the founder of The Secret Garden, an artist-run platform from Timișoara, Romania, Florin will discuss how fanzines, self-publishing, and grassroots initiatives can foster creative communities and offer artists a space for experimentation and collaboration. He will also share insights into The Secret Garden’s projects, including the DIY art book fairs, zine library, and the publication of artist books and prints.

Florin Fâra is a visual artist and curator based in Timișoara, Romania, with a background in Sociology and Art History. He is the founder of The Secret Garden, a platform established in 2012 to promote DIY culture and independent artists through various initiatives such as exhibitions, art book fairs, and the publication of fanzines and artist books. Florin’s work often focuses on urban life and the relationship between art and community, combining photography, self-publishing, and collaborative projects. His passion for DIY culture is reflected in his ongoing commitment to creating spaces for independent artistic expression.

A presentation of Kiouri@ magazine. Founded in September 2015. It is a politically and organisationally autonomous feminist collective that follows the radical feminist movement, drawing from the theoretical elaborations of second, third and fourth wave feminism, gender studies and postcolonial studies. Recognising the complex relationship between gender, race and class oppression, the group participates in the feminist movement, the anti-racist movement and the movement of solidarity with migrants and refugees. From 2018, the group  publishes the annual femzine Kiouri@, with the aim of contributing to the active and rich dialogue that is taking place on the issues of gender and feminism in political collectives and in Greek society in general.

Work with your reluctance, write the error you are, turn the material of your (self)censorship into a text. Experiment until the body snaps, blows up, and loosens to become a book.

Dimitra Ioannou experiments with narrative or anti-narrative forms in various media (language, photography,publications). She is the author of the chapbook Electric Sarcasm (Ugly Duckling Presse) and the experimental novella Soy Sea (Futura, Athens). She has exhibited her visual poems and photos in solo and group shows in Greece. She is the publisher of A) GLIMPSE) OF) press, coeditor of brossura/ a manual of pirates languages, and runs experimental writing workshops called textlab.

Απασχολούμενοι με τον ήχο, οι FLEE την τελευταία δεκαετία έχουν οργανώσει διεπιστημονικά έργα χρησιμοποιώντας τον πολιτισμό ως έρευνα και πρώτη ύλη. Κατά τη διάρκεια της ομιλίας, η συλλογικότητα θα καθορίσει θεωρητικά αυτό που αντιλαμβάνεται ότι είναι η φύση της εξίσωσης μεταξύς σύχγρονης καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας και παραδοσιακού πολιτισμού.

Εμβαθύνει στο πώς αυτές οι ταυτότητες μεταδίδονται μέσα από το πλαίσιο μιας νεανικής σύγχρονης τέχνης, αναδεικνύοντας τις ποικίλες εμπειρίες των υποκειμένων. @ Simona και Marte, ιδρυτά της Pessima θα εξετάζουν τις κύριες προκλήσεις και ορόσημα της πορείας τους: από την ανάπτυξη ενός διεθνούς περιοδικού μέχρι την επιρροή που αυτό είχε στη διαμόρφωση μιας παγκόσμιας κοινότητας τρανς καλλιτεχνών , και αντίστροφα.

Το Μότσι είναι ποιητή, καλλιτέχνη, εκδότη, διοργανωτή και χορευτή gogo που μεγάλωσε στο Περιστέρι της Αθήνας παρακολουθώντας Digimon και ελληνική τηλεόραση.

Το Feria Migra είναι ένας σημαντικός χώρος για την κυκλοφορία και την προβολή της ανεξάρτητης έντυπης τέχνης στη Λατινική Αμερική. Από την ίδρυσή του, έχει συγκεντρώσει εκδότες, καλλιτέχνες και συλλογικότητες που χρησιμοποιούν τις εκδόσεις ως μέσο καλλιτεχνικής και πολιτικής έκφρασης. Η έκθεση ξεχωρίζει για την προσφορά ενός προσβάσιμου και κοινόχρηστου χώρου όπου ανεξάρτητες και πειραματικές εκδόσεις βρίσκουν τη θέση τους έξω από τα παραδοσιακά εμπορικά κυκλώματα.

Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, το Balam, το πρώτο και μοναδικό queer φωτογραφικό περιοδικό στη Λατινική Αμερική, βρίσκει ιδιαίτερη απήχηση. Περισσότερο από ένα απλό περιοδικό, έχει γίνει ένα πολιτιστικό έργο που όχι μόνο τεκμηριώνει αλλά και επαναπροσδιορίζει τα queer φανταστικά μέσα από τη φωτογραφία. Εκτός από τον εκδοτικό του ρόλο, το Balam διοργανώνει ετήσιο ανοιχτο κάλεσμα, δημιουργώντας γέφυρα μεταξύ ανερχόμενων και καταξιωμένων καλλιτεχνών. Το περιοδικό έχει προχωρήσει σε αυτή τη δέσμευση πέρα ​​από την έντυπη σελίδα, καθώς προσκλήθηκε να εκθέσει σε μουσεία, βιβλιοπωλεία και διεθνείς εκθέσεις.

Η ομάδα Kiouri@ ιδρύθηκε τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2015. Είναι μια πολιτικά και οργανωτικά αυτόνομη φεμινιστική συλλογικότητα που ακολουθεί το ριζοσπαστικό φεμινιστικό κίνημα, αντλώντας από τις θεωρητικές επεξεργασίες του δεύτερου, τρίτου και τέταρτου κύματος φεμινισμού, μελετών φύλου και μετα-αποικιακών σπουδών. Αναγνωρίζοντας την περίπλοκη σχέση μεταξύ φύλου, φυλής και ταξικής καταπίεσης, η ομάδα συμμετέχει στο φεμινιστικό κίνημα, στο αντιρατσιστικό κίνημα και στο κίνημα αλληλεγγύης με τους μετανάστες και τους πρόσφυγες. Από το 2018, η ομάδα εκδίδει το ετήσιο femzine Kiouri@, με στόχο να συμβάλει στον ενεργό και πλούσιο διάλογο που διεξάγεται για τα θέματα του φύλου και του φεμινισμού στις πολιτικές συλλογικότητες και στην ελληνική κοινωνία γενικότερα.
